York Volleyball Club named Club of the Year by Volleyball England
York Volleyball Club gained the highest non-playing honour in the country this week as it was named as Volleyball England’s Club of the Year 2017/ 2018.
Volleyball England celebrates eight individuals and clubs for their incredible dedication and passion for the sport in their annual awards each year. York received the highest honour of Club of the Year, on Saturday 14 April, in front of a packed crowd and special guests at the weekend's Shield and Cup Finals.
Each week more than 100 players are involved in training and playing matches across the city of York with everyone from beginners and juniors to newly promoted National Volleyball Division 2 North women’s team. This would not be possible without an army of volunteers from within the club who make themselves available to coach, referee and help with school’s outreach.
Tim Godson, York Volleyball Club Chairman commented:
“York Volleyball Club has grown from strength to strength over the years due to the hard work and dedication of all of its members. We are delighted to be nominated and awarded with Club of the Year as it recognises everyone who has been involved in the club since it began in the 1970’s and reinforces our efforts as we try to widen participation in our area. Personally, I would like to thank all of our members, players, referees, coaches, volunteers and the venues we use across the city which make this club what it is.”
Volleyball England CEO Janet Inman said:
“Each week thousands of volunteers help to develop and deliver sport across the country. These volunteers are the lifeblood of every sport, not just Volleyball, and it is only fitting that we find time, as we did at our showcase event of the National Finals last weekend, to acknowledge the work this amazing group of people do to ensure Volleyball is available and accessible across England.
“Many of the winners of these awards will tell you that they are part of a team, they work together for the benefit of Volleyball and that they do little more than thousands of others, but in recognising them I would like to recognise the contribution from the others that work with and support our network of clubs and participants every week.
“York Volleyball Club has received our ‘Club of the Year’ award. They are a dedicated group that are part of the Volleyball Family but also part of the local community. They support players from grassroots to elite, work to develop their volunteers and support coaches and officials to be the best they can be. A shining example of what a well-run club can achieve with the support of its dedicated volunteers. Congratulations York Volleyball Club.
York Volleyball Club run training sessions throughout the year. The summer season will begin in May with indoor sessions for members and outdoor sessions for beginnings and recreational players. Outdoor sessions take place at Millennium Bridge, York on a Thursday evening from 6:30pm.
